Monkey Hill at Bhor Ghat 1890s
Photo taken in 1890
View of the Monkey Hill on the Bhor Ghat railway line. This was operational since the 1860s and constructed by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway.
It served as a crucial technical halt and part of an ingenious reversing station for trains ascending the steep incline, allowing heavy steam locomotives to regain power by running around their trains before proceeding to Khandala. (wikipedia)
The construction of new tunnels made this reversal obsolete by 1929. The remains of this are near the erstwhile Amruntanjan Bridge.
The majestic Dukes Nose can be seen in the background.
